She's a great success as an interior decorator. She's single, with no family responsibility though she does have a pleasant boyfriend. It's not that she doesn't care about this boyfriend, but she wouldn't mind if someone would come along and simply sweep her off her feet. Up until now the most exciting thing that has happened in her adult life is helping her best friend, Tucker, redecorate his flip home.

Tucker is a Marine waiting for his next deployment when he receives a call explaining that his brother and sister-in-law were killed in an automobile accident, leaving behind two young children. Tucker finds that his brother's dying wish was to have Tucker raise the children to which he totally agrees. But, he is reminded by the social worker in charge of the children that he could be deployed at any time, leaving the children without a guardian.

Knowing this, Tucker finds himself willing to do anything to keep the children, so he comes up with, what he thinks to be, a brilliant idea. . . one that involves Rena. He tells her about the children then he awkwardly proposes in a less than romantic way. Rena immediately sees through his proposal, recognizing it to mean marriage of convenience, not of love.

But what happens in the process of finally falling in love, is a story within itself, so I won't tell you any more I will only leave you to find out for yourself. Believe me, you won't be disappointed.

Winners

I know I'm a day late getting back to this giveaway. Now, it is up to Betsy, her family, her friends, and her faithful dog, Dorado, to unveil the truth before it is too late.Review: Smashing Hi-tech thriller!!!! This smashing sequel to JoAnn's Pages From the Past, left me wanting more. With bodies appearing and disappearing, you don't know what's going to happen next. I liked the adept way JoAnn weaves this hi-tech thriller with her rag-tag intellectuals using only their skills in hi-tech surveillance to thwart the bad guys. Dorado was again his ever-loving self, being a super hero with his fantastic abilities in aiding the team. JoAnn also brings in little known facts about our Constitution and Declaration of Independence. You can't go wrong with this suspense thriller with a climax that will surprise you. I couldn't put it down!!!! JoAnn is a very gifted writer and I will be reading more from her shortly. Though this book is a YA Paranormal, even adults will find themselves taken in because the book is so well written. It literally captures you right from the beginning and keeps you spellbound to the end.I found myself intrigued by the characters, visualizing the twists and turns of danger that enveloped them--the battles between the those of Light and the forces of darkness. Let me give you a taste of this story--hopefully just enough to cause your curiosity to compel you to read it.The main character, a teenage girl named Llona, is blessed with a special gift given to her by her mother--the gift of light. With this powerful gift she finds it difficult to blend in with those around her--to be a normal teenager. Written by Christine Hall.

Chris's life is anything but peaceful when she returns to Cattaraugus County to clean out her deceased grandmother's home. I hope what I've written will entice you to read Heather Frost's book.

I found Seers to be a fascinating read. Heather Frost stepped into the supernatural with her book and she did it with class. Seers is teen and Young adult read and one I think will thoroughly be enjoyed by all who open its cover.

Kate is a senior in high school when an accident takes the lives of her parents and sends her to the hospital. When she awakens, she finds herself seeing auras around all who come into her room. It is disturbing ability she finds best to keep confidential.

Kate's grandparents have taken the place of her--and her twin sisters--parents and, though they are very loving, she finds herself unable to tell them of her psychic ability. The only one she confides in is her best friend, Kellee.

One morning, Mr. Benson, Kate's English teacher, introduces a new student to the class, Patrick O'Donald. Kate finds herself concerned and confused because she is unable to see his aura.

Life suddenly becomes very complicated for Kate once Patrick explains that he has come to help her and why he has come to help her. Their lives soon become entwined in the danger of the journey that lies ahead of them.

Thank you.

Back to the Books Giveaway Hop

We've once again come to the part of the giveaway that is the most difficult . . . choosing the winners because I think you are all winners.

I'm ready for the drum roll . . . drum roll please. dmdmdmdmdmdmddmmdmdmdmdmdmdm

I forgot to mention that because there were 5 books to choose from, I am going to do the (pick the name out of the hat) for 5 winners.

Drum roll please. When his unloving grandparents try to take custody of young Michael, Samantha and her family fight for him and help to shape his future and the future of his mother.

Callie McAllister Falls in love with the perfect man and moves into the perfect house only to find that all is not perfect. In her search for answers, Callie discovers the journal of young Antone Bellani. As she reads the experiences of her husband's great-great-grandfather, her life takes on new meaning. Soon she sets out on an incredible journey that leads her through secret rooms and hidden caves to those who have waited hundreds of years for her to fulfill a promise made in another time.

After the death of her husband, Betsy struggles to give her own life meaning until one day her mother gives her some advice that begins to turn things around. She begins writing her weekly newspaper column again and, in one illogical moment, buys a Golden Retriever, Dorado. However, through the coming months it proves to be the best decision she ever made. When mystery begins to surround her husband's death, Dorado digs up evidence that leads Betsy and her family on a journey for the truth.

Sequel to Pages From the Past
Two years ago, her husband died. And Betsy's life changed forever. John's death drew her into a world she didn't know existed - a world of secret organizations where good and evil are constantly at war over the freedom of the American people. A world that constantly challenges her integrity, her loyalty to her country, and her willingness to sacrifice for what she knows is right.
Now, she has been called upon to help expose a group of men who have created something so evil that they could take away the freedom of every person in the United States without a single shot being fired - without anyone even knowing there had ever been a war. Clues to the puzzle come together as Betsy and her family uncover mysterious deaths, hidden research centers, and technology so advanced that it has the power to change the world. Now, it is up to Betsy, her family, her friends, and her faithful dog, Dorado, to unveil the truth before it is too late.

Etcheon always believed he would live and die in his small village that he moved to with his grandmother, Granna Fela - safe, loved and protected.
But with Granna's death comes new information about Etcheon's royal heritage and destiny, which suddenly throws him in the middle of a battle against a wicked king. On the run from hideous beasts sent to kill him, Etcheon is saved by a mysterious girl, a tree with magical powers, and several amazing animals. With his new friends to protect and teach him, Etcheon undertakes a journey that will challenge his abilities and define who he needs to become - a warrior-prince charged to save his people.

Yet again, JoAnn Arnold delivers a captivating tale, this time set in a mystical land filled with memorable characters that will make a lasting impact well beyond the story's final pages.

Thank you for stopping by and being a part of the Back to Books Giveaway Hop.

JoAnn

Conversations with a Moonflower

Conversations with a Moonflower by Chris Hall

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When I first started reading "Conversation with a Moonflower", I wasn't sure what to expect.

All you have to do to enter my giveaway is follow this blog and then leave a comment with our contract information. (Open only to those who live in the United States)

While reading about the Constitution, I found that once the Declaration of Independence had been put in place, men called Watchers, were placed in positions to over the Constitution and protect it from being defiled. I thought to myself 'what if there are Watchers today hidden away from the Government and the public eye. That idea inspired the two books I'm giving away.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 260px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ySq4IcEGGBc/TdvjJvnIP0I/AAAAAAAAAMY/hIImW9cZRm0/s400/Pages%2BFrom%2Bthe%2BPast.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610327517358997314" />
"Pages From the Past"
After the sudden death of her husband, John, Betsy Braden struggles to find meaning in her life. With help from her mother and a lovable Golden Retriever named Dorado, she slowly works her way through her loss. When Dorado digs up John's watch from beneath a tree, Betsy realizes that her husband's death was not an accident. Suddenly more clues begin materializing in the form of notebooks written in John's special shorthand - shorthand that Betsy can decipher.

Suddenly she and her family are drawn into a mysterious plot of science and technology hidden away from the government. They must solve the clues left by John before his murderer discovers what they are up to. along the way Betsy learns just how important freedom and liberty truly are.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EEs9hpkyBJE/TdvmDOaFcBI/AAAAAAAAAMg/o45H9VG-RGc/s400/The%2BSilent%2Bpatriots.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5610330703901585426" />
The Silent patriots
Two years ago, her husband died and Betsy's life changed forever. John's death drew her into a world she didn't know existed--a world of secret organization were good and evil are constantly at war over the freedom of the American people.

Now she has been called upon to help expose a group who have created something so evil that they could take away the freedom of every person n the United States without a single shot being fired--without anyone even knowing there had been been a war. Clues to the puzzle come together as Betsy and her family uncover mysterious deaths, a hidden research center, and technology so advanced that it has to power to change the world. I'm sure they were exhausted when it was over but all that they had done did not go unnoticed.

Oh, what a fun, exhilarating, educational two days it was. Just to give you a hint of what was available to us, I'll name the breakout sessions I attended.

"Building Your Blog into a Platform You can Stand On," presented by Elana Johnson. (I learned tips and tricks to get more followers, increase comments and build up my blog).

"Using Social Media Every Step of the Way." - Marion Jensen. (I learned the smart way a writer uses social media).

"the Why's and How's of Short Synopsis Writing" - Sara Crowe (Sara walked us through the elements of synopsis writing so we could make it a strong part of our query).

"Woo an Agent, Wow an Editor: Refining Your Writing," - Angela Eschler (We covered style and voice. how to streamline the manuscript (trim the fat) or tighten the plot).

"Stimulating the Slush Pile," - Guest Agents/Editors. (What makes a submission stand out? What mistakes will doom a submission to slush pile obscurity? That is the question).

The second day:

"Eight Sure-Fire Ways to Show, Not Tell - Annette Lyon (We learned eight ways to make our work show--brilliantly).

"Hooks that Get You Published." - Jeff Savage & James Dashner. (Jeff and James discussed how to create a hook, possibly the most important paragraph (or two) in the process of selling your novel).

"Building Author/Editor Relationships that Build Careers" - Kirk Shaw (Great advice given in this class, as well).

"The Basics of Giving Good Interviews." - Crystal Liechty (Once again, great advice was given).

In fact, I was given great advice in every class. I can't say enough about the learning opportunities that were available to all who attended, and there were many, many who attended.

The food was delicious. The friendly association with other authors, those just starting out on their journey and those who have the craft down to science, was fun. In fact the whole conference was filled with fun.

Thank you for stopping by and have a great day

Lucky Leprechaun Giveaway Hop

First I want to thank all of you who particpated in my blog book giveaway. All you have to do to enter my giveaway is follow this blog and then leave a comment with your contact information. (Open only to those who live in the United States)

I believe that what we dream helps to make us what we are. Dreams fill our imaginations, and it is the imagination that gives us power to believe that we can become that which is our destiny.

Bernard Edmonds said, "To dream anything that you want to dream; that is the beauty of the human mind. to do anything that you want to do; that is the strength of the human will. To trust yourself to test you limits; that is the courage to succeed.

First Etcheon is given the dream, then the strength of will, and finally the trust of those who have prepared him, as he finds himself battling the evil tricks of magic in order to save his people.

His mentors include two Great Danes, a panther, a two-headed lamb, an owl, a horse, a beautiful princess, and the ancient of trees. What they teach him makes him more powerful than the evil and twisted wizard he must battle in order to reach the kingdom he must save. But it's not only the wizard he has to contend with. An equally wicked King, who holds his mother and father prisoners, watches for his arrival.

Three of his animals travel with him, back in time to the place of his birth and stand with him as he finds his place in each realm in which he exists.

Don't forget to click on the above link to find other blogs that are doing the same thing I am.

Bombing Harvey - Based on a true story

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_vHp5soUUYWc/TTsduid_5dI/AAAAAAAAALk/WHft1GEMmSw/s400/bombing%2BHarvey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565074449910195666" />

I had the amazing opportunity to co-author this book with John Birges Jr., the son of the man who, in 1980, placed a 1,000-pound bomb inside Harvey's Casino at Lake Tahoe, Nevada, with the intent of extorting $3,000,000.00.

John Birges Sr., was a Hungarian Scientist. When the Nazis invaded Hungary, he was forced to join the German Luftwaffe and was trained as a pilot. He scored thirteen kills before his plane was shot down and he found himself in a Russian prison camp. With all odds against him, he managed to escape-first from the prison then from the war, finding his way to America, and Clovis, California with is wife, Elisabet. There, he became a successful business man. But with wealth came the a dramatic change in his life and gambling became his obsession as well as the beginning of his downfall.

The story is told in first person by John Birges, Jr. who was an eye-witness as well as a participant to much of what is written. His father first demanded his help and that of his brother, Jim, in stealing the necessary items needed to build the bomb, then baited him into helping build the bomb, itself. In telling his story, John Jr. gives the reader a harrowing look into the life of his father, a man driven by a gambling addiction.

To bring this book to life, information was gathered from many different sources including: Las Vegas Review-Journal, Fresno Bee, Tahoe Daily Tribune, North Lake Tahoe Bonanza, The New Your Times, A&E's City Confidential, Season ll, Episode 7. The History Channel's FBI Files, 2005 episode. FBI files and reports on the investigation obtained under the Freedom of Information Act. Much of the work done in gathering this information was done by Linda Cowell, who's efforts made this book possible.

Co-authoring this book with John Jr. has been a unique experience for me, as I became fascinated with his story. I've never met John in person and only had two conversations over the phone with him during the months we worked together. Everything was done via e-mail or through Linda Cowell. There were times when John and I didn't totally agree on how to put a chapter together, but we each gave in a little and it worked.

Thank you, John, for letting me co-author "Bombing Harvey."

Book Review - "The Wishing Hour"

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_vHp5soUUYWc/TTXwu6ehTXI/AAAAAAAAALc/ntQvEa7Gn9A/s400/the%2Bwishing%2Bhour.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5563617603448032626" />

The Wishing Hour
Written by Jewel Adams

Today, I'm reviewing "The Wishing Hour", by Jewel Adams. When I started reading this book, I found it to be one that I could simply relax and enjoy.

In the first pages, we read about Celine Anderson who, as far as she knows, is alone in this world, having lost all who were related to her. But what she doesn't know is that close by, a immortal named Sebastian, watches over her and protects her from the Urchin army of Lord Derth, the dark creature who wants to take her life for reasons of his own.

As the story unfolds, Sebastian introduces himself to Celine, explaining his responsibility to her. The next pages are filled with their journey to Sebastian's home, hidden from the world of mortals.

Celine learns the beauty and comfort of unconditional love given her by Sebastian, and she, in return, falls deeply in love with him. She finds that she had been given a special gift that will prepare her to fulfill an ancient prophesy - a prophesy Lord Derth can't allow her to fulfill.

I won't tell you anymore because I think you should read the book for yourself and find out what really happens. As I read this story, I felt as if I was reading a beautiful fairytale. It's well written and I want to compliment Jewel for her wonderful talent and thank her publicly for allowing me to read and review "The Wishing Hour"

Thank you, Jewel.

Book Review - "No Going Back" by Jonathan Langford

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 160px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_vHp5soUUYWc/TQ-zkiduwHI/AAAAAAAAAJs/kxE0w2UP-W0/s400/No%2BGoing%2BBack.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552854305879277682" />

Today, I'm doing a review of "No going back". This book is LDS fiction and aimed toward young adults. It's author, Jonathan Langford, takes a subject that can be very controversial, and brings to life, the emotional pain caused by it's reality.

"No Going Back," tells the story of a 15-year-old boy named Paul, who finds himself attracted to another boy his age. He is active in his church and wants nothing more than a normal life, a temple marriage, and a family. He finds himself confused and frightened. Though he endures the torment of some, he also feels the hope and faith of others who stand by him, giving him the strength to fight this battle.

Interestingly enough, Several years ago I read a true story written by a man who found himself in the same situation. He wrote about the pain it caused him when he realized his situation. I wish I could remember the name of the book because it literally brings fiction and non-fiction together in a way that gives answers to the questions that thunder inside Paul.

In the non-fiction book, the man tells how he battled against the desire. How, through faith, prayer, fasting, and studying the scriptures, he overcame the desire and was happily married and had a family.

What I found disturbing was the fact that when his book was published, the gay community went after him, verbally and physically, to the point that even his life was threatened. They didn't want to believe that it was possible to overcome something that so powerfully directed their lives.

In "No Going Back" Jonathan brings to the reader, an understanding of what a young man (or young woman, for that fact) might have to deal with when faced with this deeply controversial reality.

I want to thank Jonathan for letting me review his well-written and compelling book.

Book Review of "The Cleansing of America" by Cleon Skousen

I can't explain the depth of emotion that filled me as I read "The Cleansing of American," only that it gave me a sense of peace . . . a feeling of calm during the storm, so to speak. With all that is happening in our country, today . . . the turmoil, dishonesty, half truths and complete lies, I found on the pages of this book - truth, and the promises of truth.

Just reading the topics discussed in each chapter brought an emotion of anticipation and the need to learn more - to read each chapter with a sense of knowing and understanding.

It was book I couldn't put down without its message clinging to my thoughts. I finished it in two settings and have begun reading it for the second time. It is a book that will help all who read it understand more about our Nation, our lives, and our responsibility to God and to Country.

Mr. Skousen takes his information from the scriptures as well as words and revelations of the prophets, both ancient and modern. He doesn't suppose what he can not prove.

At the end of the book, Mr. Skousen writes of a vision given to Charles D. Evans. I want to take just a paragraph from that vision and share it with you. The Angel said: “Look again.” I looked and beheld that many who were angry with the rulers of the Republic, for their subversion of the Constitutional Law, and their wholesale plunder of the Public moneys, arose and proclaimed themselves the friends of the Constitution in its original form . . .

I ask you, isn't that what is happening now . . . today?

Take the time to read this book. First we had children and grandchildren for the Christmas holidays. (Oh, what fun we had.) After that I was the caregiver to my mom for 5 weeks, and oh what fun we had once we got the infection and swelling in her legs taken care of (We spent 5 evenings at the ER while she received intravenous antibiotics . . . 5 hours the first night then 2, then 1, then 2, then 3 hours the consecutive nights. After that she had to recuperate, and At 87 recuperating takes time.) So, to make a long story short, I spent very little time at the computer and my blog went untouched.

So . . . today is a good day to get back to the real world of e-mails, blogs, and painting. And . . . a drum roll please . . . the review of Tristi Pinkson's intriguing, humorous, mystery, "Secret Sisters," which will be coming out in March.

However . . . before I begin . . . I have to say one thing. I was a Relief Society President for 3 years and I never . . . ever . . . had the opportunity to become a sleuth or a spy, if you will. Now to the review. (Did that catch your interest?)

Ida May Babbitt is the Ward Relief Society President. Her counselors are Arlette Morgan and Tansy Smith. Her secretary is Hannah Eyre. Each woman carries with her a distinct personality which makes this presidency perform with total efficiency as the reader will find out as the story unfolds.

As the Relief Society President, Ida May feels the responsibility to relieve Bishop Sylvester from any undue stress as he is suffering, at the moment, from high blood pressure (most likely due to the fact that his wife is expecting triplets). So, in the course of her weekly presidency meeting, when she discovers that the Dunn family have no food in their fridge, cupboards, or any where else in the kitchen, and knowing that Bro. Dunn has been out of work for 4 months, she takes it upon herself to examine the situation. But during the visit with Mary Dunn, she is told that Bro Dunn would be bringing home groceries that night.

However, Ida May is suspiciuos that Mary may not be telling the truth, perhaps because of pride or even shame. She shares her concern with her nephew Ren, who is more like a son to her than a nephew.

Ren is a free spirit, who loves to invent mechanical gismos. and, at the age of 25, is still trying to decide what to be when he grows up. Yet, he is a young man with a head full of understanding for everything from politics to Quantum Physics, and he has just the answer.

"Undercover work," he suggests. "Just to make sure that the children have food to eat."

Spying! At first she is shocked. But, slowly she warms up to the idea, but only for the sake of the children. Ren provides the equipment and soon the whole presidency in involved in the risky undertaking, and what they discover they are hardly prepared for. Yet, they are now in too deep to step away.

And the reader is hooked, especially if the reader is or ever has been a Relief Society President, a part of a Relief Society Presidency, or has known a Relief Society President.

At this point I will refrain from telling telling you more but I will promise you that you will thoroughly enjoy "Secret Sisters."

Thank you for visiting my blog.

Today is a good day for a Christmas story

Today, I would like to share a Christmas story with you. It's a beautiful reminder of what Christmas is all about.

I had just closed my eyes and began to feel the calm feeling of sleep when I heard a sound that shouldn’t be heard when one is sitting alone in a room of quiet repose. I quickly opened my eyes and, to my surprise, Santa Clause stepped out from behind the Christmas tree, a bag of what I thought to be toys, at his side.

“What are you . . .? I started to ask. But I said no more for I saw the tears that filled his eyes. He answered the question I had begun to ask with a simple statement. “Teach the Children.”

I was puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Teach the children the true meaning of Christmas . . . the meaning that Christmas today has forgotten.”

I watched as he reached into the toy bag and removed a brilliant, shiny star.

“Teach the children that long ages ago God promised a Savior for the world and the star was a sign of the fulfillment of that promise. The countless shining stars at night now show the burning hope to all mankind.”

Santa gently laid the star upon the fireplace mantle and, again reached into his bag. When his hand reappeared, it held a glittering red Christmas tree ornament. “Teach the children," he continued, "that red was the first color of Christmas. In the beginning it was a reminder, to the faithful, of the blood that was shed by the Savior, for all mankind. Christ gave His life and shed His blood that every man might have God’s gift of Eternal Life. Red is deep, intense, vivid. It is the greatest color of all. It is a symbol of a gift from God.” He placed the ball on the tree.

“The pure green color of the stately fir tree remains green all year round,” he said, a gentle smile forming on his face, as he turned back to me. “It depicts the everlasting hope of mankind. Green is the youthful, hopeful, abundant color of nature. All the needles point heavenward . . . symbols of Man’s returning thoughts toward heaven."

Again he reached into his bag, removing a silver bell. Its tinkling sounded through the quiet of the room as he placed it on the tree. “Teach the children that as the lost sheep are found by the sound of the bell, it also rings for man to return to the fold. It means guidance and return. It further signifies that all are precious in the eyes of the Lord.”

Next, he removed a candle from his bag and placed it on the mantle. Its tiny flame cast a gentle glow about the room. “Teach the children that the candle shows man’s thanks for the star of long ago. Its small light is the mirror of starlight."

Then Santa reached down under the tree and took a gift from beneath it, touching the bow. “A bow is placed on a present to remind us of the spirit of the brotherhood of man. The bow is tied as men should be tied with the bonds of good will toward each other. Good will forever is the message of the bow.”

Santa slung his bag over his shoulder and reached for the candy cane placed high on the tree. “Teach the children that the candy cane represents the shepherd’s crook. The crook on the staff helps bring the sheep, who have strayed, back to the flock. The candy cane is the symbol that we are our brother’s keeper.”

I watched as he removed one more item from his bag - a large holly wreath - and placed it on my door. “Please teach the children that the wreath symbolizes the eternal nature of love. It never ceases, stops, or ends. It is one continuous round of affection. It is also a reminder of the crown of thorns, at the time of Christ's sacrifice."

As I looked into Santa's eyes, I could see the love he had for the Savior. He loved him with a greater understanding than any other man I knew, and the tears that once clouded his eyes now clouded my own.

I closed my eyes and wiped the tears away away. But when I opened my eyes again, he was gone and I couldn't help but wonder if he really had been been there at all . . . or had I just been dreaming. If it was a dream, it now became my reality, and I will always remember that day and how I learned the true meaning of Christmas and the symbols that made it so meaningful.

Isn't that a enlightening story. I know we all understand the meaning of the star, but did we know what the ornament, the fur tree, the bell, the candle, the holly wreath, and the candy cane represented?

My Christmas wish is that we will always remember the true meaning of Christmas and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Thank you for visiting my blog.

A picture is worth a thousand words

I wanted to share with you this portrait I did of my father who died at the age of 58. He was about 24 years old. I painted it for my Mom for Mother's Day, this year. It was an emotional work and I knew it would be because my dad and I were very close.

Something else I want to share with you that goes along with the theme of my post. Brent and I bought a movie camera the first year of our marriage. I was a cheap camera. College students can't afford too much even though Brent was on a full ride Scholarship, He was a pitcher for the 61-65 U of U baseball team. amd one of the best too. His fast ball was around 96 mph. He was being watched by the Pittsburg Pirates and the White Sox. Then, one cold day he pitched 12 innings. Utah won the game 1 to 0. He had pitched a shutout and in doing so on that very cold day, his arm was never the same. Oh, he was good enough to try out for the pros. but he walked away, knowing his life has another purpose.

anyway, back to the cheap camera. We used it to take over 100 movies of our first years of marriage. Movies of the 4 baby boys that grew up and became fathers, themselves. Movies of so many friends and family - and they all walked and moved like the people in the silent movies- fast (remember, it was a cheap camera) but, oh, the memories. The camera broke when our fourth son was just a baby. the projector broke after years of watching the films, so we had this great idea. We would put the films on DVD's. Great idea, and it worked. Every picture is worth a thousand words, and we sit in silence holding hands and watch the babies growing up, the friends that remain close in our hearts, and the family some of whom have passed away, yet who still live on DVD. The smiles mingle with tears as the memories pass before our eyes.

I find as I paint that the painting speaks to me just like the characters in the books I write. Some may think that sounds a little corny, but they say artistic people are a little strange. I'll accept that. It's an excuse for all the strange things I find myself doing.

I think what I'm trying to say is that these pictures I've taken (with the help of my husband), and the paint I have put on canvas, and books I have written, reach out to me and remind me of how blessed I am.

Thank you for stopping by.

Book Review of By Love or By Sea

"By Love or By Sea" is a romance novel written by Rachel Rager

This story begins in a small dress shop owned by Alice Lind Frank's grandparents, where the cantankerous old woman, Betsey Winters is complaining to Alice about the price of the dresses, among other things. That same day Alice passes a rather ragged looking sailor on her way home. Just the glimpse of his face brings back a memory of a boy named Calab who she loved when she was only six years old - a boy lost at sea as a young man. This sailer and catankerous Betsey Winters both play vital roles in the romantic novel, "By Love or By Sea."

To add action to the story, the wealthy, arrogant, shipyard owner, Clarence Hielott, expects Alice to marry him, though he has yet to propose. Once he finds out that Calob has returned, he also finds that Alice is infatuated with the sailer. But Clarence knows secrets of Calab's past and when he realizes what is happening, he defiantly discloses every secret to Alice, determined to turn her away from the young man and into his arms.

As you read this book, you will appreciate how Rachel has developed her characters. surprisingly Cantankerous Betsy Winters becomes one of my favorite. I also applaud Gace, Alice's friend, who gives her some timely advice, standing by her throughout this tramatic and emotional experience. Needless to say, I dislike Clarence -
intensely.

It takes a few minutes to get into the book, but once you do, you'll become infatuated with the story, the characters . . . oh yes, and the pirates. Ah! now I have really caught your attention, haven't I.

I can promice that you will enjoy reading "By Love or By Sea." It was so much fun.

Today I'd would like to tell you something that touched me more than I could imagine. Last night when I got home from a meeting, my husband presented me with a plate of cookies wrapped in decortive cellophane. He said that the Young Women's Presidency and several young women came to our home with a very special treat. Then he handed me a card that read:

Virtue - JoAnn Arnold
"Sister Arnold is the mother of 4 successful boys and is a great example to her 4 daughters-in-law. She is a talented artist and musician. She is also an author of several LDS Fiction novels. She paints and has done some beautiful paintings of her grandchildren. She sings with the Heritage Choir in St. George. She has been a Relief Society President in this ward. She is always sweet and gracious. She has a great attitude with her many health problems. You are always uplifted when you are in her presence. She is very courageous. She is very kind to her mother and sister. She has a testimony and definitely has Christ's image in her countenance. Her life is an example of being a virtuous woman."

I'm not putting this in my blog for any other reason than to say that I didn't know that they were aware of what I was doing in my life, I didn't know they were aware of my health problems. I didn't know what they were seeing when they looked at me, this older woman of 66. I didn't know that they were watching.

It made me realize that none of us never know who might be watching. I think of those I watched as I was growing up. I think of the friends I graduated from high school with, who touched my life with their strength, their humor, their desire to achieve. I wanted to be like them. I watched the strength of my father the last years of his life. He died at the age of 58, and he swore he would die with his boots on and he did. He is my hero.

I watch those of you who take the time to read my manuscripts and help me make them better, and I am grateful for your willingness and your friendship. I watch you, my author friends. I read your books and I learn from you. All the friends I've make through the years, I've watched them and I've learned from them.

I used to go to the Nursing home in Ferron, once a month and sing to those who lived there, and I learned so much from them. I would come away knowing they had given me more than I could ever give them. From them I learned a kind of strength and courage I couldn't have learned anywhere else. I learned patience, endurance, and faith. Some of them couldn't communicate. Some had Alzeimers, Some were confined to wheel chairs. But they were all so beautiful.

Okay, now I'm all weepy and teary eyed but I don't care. It's good to get emotional once in a while over the beautiful things in your life.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog.

And the Winner is . . . . . ..

I want to thank all of you who stopped in and visited my blog and entered your name for a drawing of "Apples for Sale" a 18 x 24 print of the original oil painting.

I started painting when I was about 34 years old. My siblings were all artistic and I decided if they were, so could I be, so I took myself seriously and began to paint and found out that I loved it.

Okay, enough of that. Now to choose the winner. I put all the names of a piece of paper and then cut them out. Then I mixed them all together and closed my eyes, choosing one. And the winner is ....... Uchtdorf said, "The desire to create is one of the deepest yearning of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before. Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves and others when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty. you are the spirit children of the most creative Being in the universe. Isn't it remarkable to think that your very spirits are fashioned by an endlessly creative and eternally compassionate god?"

When I first read this, my thoughts were narrowed to creating works of art. Authoring great books. "Inventing something incredibly vital to the human race, etc. Then after giving it deeper thought, I decided there was much more to this statement. Creating a deep and lasting friendship is a yearning of the human soul. Friendships bring deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We mold a friendship into something of beauty. Everything fits.

This summer I attended my Class of 61 reunion. Some of us hadn't seen each other for 48 years. It was an emotion reunion and the bond of friendship was reunited and remolded

My siblings and I were in charge of the Huff Reunion and as we came together as family the bonds of friendship was so powerfully strong that it reminded me that friendship is also part of being a close family.

Frindship. what a beautiful and creative word. It's mean "one attached to another by esteem and affection. A supporter. One who cares."

I have made many friends throughout the years who remain dear and close friends, and I think that e-mail is a blessing because it has brought us back together though we all live away from each other, now.

I belong to an in-line group called "Friends Forever." It's a group made up of authors and a few who are friends of authors. It's a group that cares about each other, who support each other, and we have fun as we discuss many more things than just writing a book.

Oh! aren't friends great!!! Isn't the power of friendship a miracle in our lives?

Well, I know that I've been very serious in this post but I just had to let you know
how much your friendship means to me.

Oh! and one more thing. On our Cedarfortauthors blogspot, someone came up with the idea of giving away a book once in a while, when we blog. Soooo, I decided on my personal blog, and because all of you are my good friends, I would like to give away a print of one of my paintings. Now to qualify, you have to have: 1. Read this blog, of course. 2. Go to my website www.joannarnold.com, and click on my paintings.
3. Name the painting featured on my blog page. 4. comment on this blog (just below) or my e-mail (bjarnold@infowest.com), giving me the name of the painting. Then, in one week from today, I will draw a name from the list and post it here.

Isn't this going to be fun!!!

Sometimes Life Doesn't Live Up to Its Expectations (Or did I already mention that?)

Does life live up to your expectations? That is my question. I expected to sleep good every night because one needs their seven hours of sleep. But I find myself waking up far too early every morning wondering what ever happened to sleep as I once knew it. Sleep . . . to rest body and mind. To be without ordinary consciousness. To slumber, to snooze, etc.

For some unknown reason it simply disappeared from my pillow a few years ago and the mystery as to its whereabouts remains a mystery to me. I used to be able to sleep through the night without a single eye-twitch. Now if there's five hours between the awakened state, I'm estatic.

Ah! But there's an upside to this mystery. One gets a lot done between the hours of 4am. and 8 am. Take this morning, for example. I have printed out a manuscript, posted my writer's blog and attempted to fix the little floater in the toilet. I checked my e-mail then, took a break from this blog long enough to go for a walk and do my Qi Gong exercises, and now I'm back.

Maybe there is meaning in this madness. . . . . wait a minute, I'm thinking. . . . . turning it over in my mind . . . Ahaa, I do believe I've found the answer. Did you know that the imagination wakes up long before our eyes open? (well most eyes anyway). That between 4 am and 8 am creativity is at its best? Is there anyone out there that can dispute this theory? I hope not because it sounded so good inside my head. All in all I've decided that life does live up to its expectations, we just have to awake to realize it.

As Edna St. Vincent Millay put it.

My candle burns at both ends
It will not last the night.
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends,
It gives a lovely light.

Oh, one more thing. I hope you noticed my book covers that I also added this morning. I wish there was a way to make them more creatively placed but I don't think this blog program will let me do that.

Thank you for visiting my blog and please come again.

Life Doesn't always live up To it's Expectation

Class of 61 Reunion and Wrinkles

A few weeks ago I wrote about wrinkles and how they are a part of God's plan. Today, I think I need to inform you that they are vital to those of us over 50 - for they are a sign of tremendous knowledge, of great and wonderous experiences as well as sad and humbling experiences that have left their mark through the wrinkles that have come to stay.

Today I want to talk about aging wrinkles and ageless friendship.

On July 2nd, The North Emery High graduating class of 1961 met at the Holiday Inn in Price, Utah, for a dinner and a get-to-know-you-again social. There were, I think, 34 classmates out of a graduating class of 57, in attendance. (Ten of our classmates have passed away). This was only our 5th reunion in 48 years.

Were there wrinkles? Oh, yes!! Lots of them. But what beautiful wrinkles. Were there smiles? Wonderful smiles, arranging those wrinkles around the mouth into cascading emotion. Were there memories? There were hundreds - maybe even thousands of humorous, tender, gloriously amazing memories. And what did we do? We laughed and we talked. We took pictures and we reminised. It was a night none of us will ever forget. It touched our hearts to the extent that we are already planning our 50th.

As I write this, tears form in my eyes and I can't seem find the words that describe the emotion I feel. But I can tell you this; our friendship has survived the years. It has stood the test of time.

I want to end this post with a poem.

Each wrinkle tells its story. Tis one that cannot lie.
for it's engraved and polished, but could someone tell me why,
It made itself so soon at home in the corner of my eye?

Not that I'm complaining, mind you, But this one wrinkle is not alone.
Instead, it has invited many others, who have also made themselves at home.
Around my eyes. In the corners of my mouth. Across my forehead they are sewn.

I have decide that tomorrow when I wake up and my mirror shows a stranger there,
With wrinkles multiplying rapidly, I shall simply tell myself I do not care.
For I have earned them, every one, and I will wear them proudly. I have to tell you that, in the beginning, when I read the synopsis, I knew I was out of my genre. No deep mystery to unravel. No SiFi exploration or adventure, and I said to myself. "Mmmmm."
Then I opened to the first page and began to read. My Mmmm, turned to a Ahhh, and I was captured.

Almost immediately I wanted to smack Justin in the face. How could he leave this beautiful young woman, who wanted nothing more than a happy marriage, waiting at the doors of the temple while he flew off to marry another?

I read every chance I got because I wanted to know what life had in store for Caitlyn because Rebecca had, with emotion and humor, delivered each chapter
in a way that kept the reader hooked and entertained.

I immediately liked Caitlyn's best friend. Brittany. I loved her sense of humor and her wisdom. I liked Travis, though there were times when I wanted to give him a quick knock to the side of his head when he left Caitlyn wondering, guessing, and yes, even confused.

But you see, It's emotions like these what keep the reader reading - wanting to know the rest of the story because each character is so well defined that they come alive in the reader's mind.

When we got to Omaha, our granddaughter, McKenzie, who is 12 years old, asked if she could read the book. I told her she could, and that when she finished, I wanted her to write her own review.

McKenzie's review: "I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! It was very cute and clever. I couldn't put it down and evern when I did, I wanted to pick it right back up. I loved how the author made it, in a way, sort of funny. It was heartwarming and fun."

Thank you, McKenzie, for your review. And, thank you Rebecca for writing such a witty, emotional and enchanting book.

This week is a good time to take a vacation and see old friends

Is it just me or are the years tumbling down around us? Tomorrow Brent and I are meeting several of our classmates from the Class of 61 (Let's see, how many years is that?)for dinner. Do you realize that in two more years we'll have been out of high school for 50 years? Ahhhh!!!. One postive point is this; we are all the same age. We'll all have winkles. Our hair will be grayed or gone. But our hearts will forever be young and that's what counts.

After our reunion, Brent and I are leaving for a vacation to the Black Hills of the Dakota's, after which we head to Omaha to visit our son, his wife, and our grandchildren.

Have you ever noticed that grandchildren don't care how many wrinkles we have, and their parents refrain from talking about them? It's true. Test it out (except maybe on the really forward ones who have no problem with asking what those things on your face).

Oh, that reminds me, in my book "Pages From the Past" Betsy wakes up one morning to find her knees beginning to wrinkle. She makes a quick call to her mother, complaining about the unsightly things. Showing no sympathy, Elmira explains it this way. "You've got too much time on your hands, Betsy. You need to get a life and today would be a good day to get one.

Then she goes on to explain that God intended wrinkles to be a part of our life. "I can't quote scripture or verse," she says, "but he basically said that where there is wisdom and learning, there are wrinkles in which to store them."

Now doesn't that make you feel better about the wrinkles? Of course it does because in the years between high school graduation and 2009, we have acquired so much knowledge, We've experienced so much of life. We've made it through the rain and entered the golden years.

While we're on the subject, let's take a minute and address the golden years. Do you sometimes think they're not all they are cracked to be? Maybe they're a little too pushy? Perhaps more trouble than they're worth? Yet, in all of this I have found one positive. They give us the excuse not to do anything we don't want to do - because we're too old. We can say what we want to say because we're so old. (Keep digging, JoAnn, and maybe you'll even convince yourself).

In closing, I leave this you with this thought. Wrinkles are only meant for those smart enough to handle them. They are like trophies to be envied by the world. Let's wear them with pride. Let's show them off as if they were diamonds. Yes!!!! (Ouch! that hurt my back).

P.S. I'll get back to you when I return from vacation and let you know how everything went - you know - with the wrinkle thing and all that.

Wednesdays are good days to talk about books

I went to my Acupuncturer (I guess that's how you would say it) this morning. He put a needle in a spot that would help me sleep better. Now here it is 4:00 pm. and I'm very, very sleepy. But I must finish the blog before I drift off.

Acupuncture is an interesting procedure and I'm glad I was introduced to it. It has helped my Meniere's, and RA. No, it is not painless, but once all the needles are in place, and the little bit of pain has calmed down, you just lay back in the recliner, close your eyes, and listen to quiet music for about an hour. It's great.

Now to the books, or I should say, book. I want to tell you about "The Silent Patriots" - a sequel to "Pages From the Past." Remember in "Pages from the Past" Betsy was drawn into a world she didn't know existed as she and her family solved the mysterious death of her husband. It was a world of secret organizations where good and evil were constantly at war - One fighting to keep America free - the other fighting to take our freedom away.

In "The Silent Patriots" those who wish to have all power have pushed technology one step further. When the danger is exposed, Garrett recruits Betsy and her family,(and, of course the hero, Dorado) once again, to join with the Patriots in finding and eliminating the enemy. Interestingly enough, technology from the past proves itself to be as powerful as that of modern day in unraveling the terrifying mystery.

As the story unfolds, dead bodies appear in strange places - human bodies that seem not quite human. In the search to find the truth, these Silent Patriots uncover a science lab hidden away from prying eyes. But it's what they discover inside the walls that makes them truly aware of the mind boggling, terrifying plot they have uncovered.

In this book the reader will find a lot of suspense, a touch of romance, and, as the author might say, mysterious and exciting adventure. Thank you for visiting my blog.

(I have to admit, at this point, that I did sneak away and take a quick nap - not long but very beneficial).

Tuesday is a good day to tell a story

This is a story about a lovely young woman named Callie McAllister, who falls in love with, and marries, the perfect man. They move into a beautiful mansion that has been in her husband's family for hundreds of years. Then, one morning Callie wakes up to find that her husband is far from perfect, and her marriage is not what she had dreamed it to be.

In her search for answers, she wonders through the section of the mansion that has been closed for over a hundred years. In one of the many rooms, she discovers a dusty, old journal. The name on the cover is Antone Bellani - her husband's great-great-grandfather. She wipes the cobwebs from the journal and finds a comfortable, though deterioating old chair.

Carefully, she opens the journal and begins to read about a young boy's adventures. Then, suddenly, the tone of the journal changes and she feels a chill run down her spins as she reads four separate entries spanning a two-year period.

May 1830
Today is my thirteenth birthday. My father did not come to celebrate with me. He is too busy trading slaves. . . . .

June 1830
In my dreams I see the faces of the children my father keeps in the cave . . . .

January 1831
I wish my father was a better man. He does not love my mother as he should. He does not love me . . . .

May 1831
today, I am fourteen. My mother gave me a dog. I think he will replace my father in my heart for he is better than my father . . . . .

October 1892
My father told me these people have no souls, but I know they have beautiful souls . . .

the remaining pages of the journal were blank. But what Callie learns from the pages she has read will lead her on a journey through secret rooms and hidden caves to those who have waited hundreds of years for her to fulfill a promise she had made in another time.

The name of the story (book) is "Journey of the Promise." If you have a chance to read it, please do so. The author would be ever so grateful.

Before I sign off, I want to leave you with this thought: "Do not pray for tasks equal to your power. Pray for power equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle. You shall be the miracle."

I can't remember whose quote this is. I only know that it has affected my life for good. Okay, I can do this. I just need to post this. Then, the magic wand will appear, and POOF!!. Everyone will directed to my post. They will read what I have written, and want to buy my book. How hard can it be? Right??

Though I know that's not going to happen, if - on the other hand - I don't post, no one will read about my books. So I shall give it my best shot. Please let me guide you through the synopsis of my third book "Pages From the Past."

A synopsis: Betsy Braden was raised in a home where patriotism and knowledge of the Constituation were manditory. Now, many years later, she writes a weekly article on these very subjects that appear in national newspapers. But, with the sudden death of her husband, John, Betsy struggles to find meaning in her life, and her articles cease to appear. Finally, one year to the day after John's death, her mother says to her. "Betsy, it's time for you to get a life. Today would be a good time to begin."

Betsy does get a life with the purchse of a Golden Retriever Puppy she names Dorado. Once an understanding is formed between the two, they become inseparateable and, one day while on their daily walk through the woods that separates her home from her mothers, Dorado begins to dig. What he finds and places at Betsy's feet, is her dead husband's watch. Shocked, she examines the dark stains and dirt that has encrusted themselves on the watch, and becomes painfully aware that her husband did not die from natural causes. He was murdered.

Suddenly, clues begin to appear as if they were meant to be discovered at this point in time - clues left behind by John, himself. Clues that lead Betsy, Dorado, and her family, to uncover a mysterious, scientifically, high-tech plot to secretly remove all that America stands for, and it is imparative that they unravel the clues before John's murderer discovers what they are up to. Along the way, Betsy learns of the secret life her husband led, and a few secrets her mother hides, as well.

Okay. I hope Bron Bahlmann won't mind me revealing that little fact, but it is something I had to continue to remind myself as I read this book, both in the amazing story and the yet-to-learn stuff.

This is a story of two 15-year-old boys who had to suddenly step into a world unknown to them in order to save their families from an evil Necromancer who, while in search of human souls has swept the countryside, leaving their village burned to the ground while enslaving their families.

There were times when the conversation between two 15-year-old warriors sounded exactly as it was - conversation between two 15-year-old boys, and the dialogue and storytelling sometimes got wordy. But that didn't bother me.

It was in describing the different creatures they encountered as they searched for the Necromancer's city of bones, that the reader is introduced into the amazing imagination of Bron as his imagination takes you on a journey filled with fear, danger, intrigue, a touch of humor and keeps you caught up in the adventure.

I wish you great success, Bron. You'll have a bright future ahead if you want it bad enough to never stop writing.

Other Things: Last night we watched the Memorial Day Concert on channel 7. I hope millions of people watched it, it was a reminder of who we are and what we are. It was a reminder of what we have because of those who are not afraid to defend this country.

On the screen they showed a young man sat in a wheelchair, unable to move. Amunition had exploded inside his helmet, into his brain. How he survived is a miracle. I wonder if the purpose of this miracle is so that we can realize what has been sacrificed in our behalf. I can still see that young man's vacant eyes and open mouth in my mind, and I hope it stays there so I will not forget his sacrifice. I want to remember every morning when I wake up, the blessings that are mine because of those who protect my freedom.

Something Exciting to Share.

Now, I'm not boasting or anything as I share this e-mail I received, a few days ago, from Bevan at Cedar Fort. I just want to share it with you. (Well, maybe I feel a little bit proud, but its only natural that one would feel a little proud when someone has reviewed their book with such enthusiasm). Read on:

(Editor's note: It is always a delight when a young person finds delight in reading a book. Sarah is the daughter of Trevor Holyoak, one of our really fine reviewers. Here are her thoughts, basically unedited, on this title from Horizon. I think we need to encourage our young people to read. It gives me hope for the future. Jeffry Needles)

"Prince Etcheon and the secret of the Ancient." Reviewed by Sara Holyoak.

This book is amazing, fabulous, cool, clever. If I had knowledge of all the words that meant I loved it I would use them, except it would probably bore people. I highly recommend this book to any people who love fantasy. The first reason is it has a great plot. The book starts out when prince Etcheon's Granny Fela dies. So he gets a mysterious note that tells him he is the prince of another land and time. He goes to this beautifultimeless valley where there is a pretty lady named Tarainisafari who brings comfort and help, along with some ancient trees and some wise talking animals that each have something to teach Etcheon before he is ready to embark on a quest with a timepiece to rescue his parents, hisl and, and his people from a terrible king and a wizard.

Another reason why you should read this is because it is original. It is not copying any book or movie as far as I know of. It came right out ofthe author's head and I don't think anybody else could think of it. It is exciting and interesting. Another reason is because it is adventurous and entertaining. The first sentence just draws you in. It holds the readers through the whole book.It makes me feel like there needs to be a sequel.

Another reason is, and I feel it is the best, is it is appropriate. There's no swearing or bad stuff. It shows people that Mormons aren't that bad because they don't swear or stuff in their books.

I think the book is great, but I feel like it needs more details of the people and the settings. Like for Granny Fela I imagine a small ladywith gray hair streaked with black in a bun, and a tan wrinkled face with bright kind brown eyes. But I don't know if the author wanted the reader to imagine that. But other than that I am absolutely positive that this is a great novel that anyone would greatly miss out if they didn't read it.

Thank you, Sarah, I don't think reviews get any better than that. When you've touched a young reader, it makes every minute, every re-write, every storm of imagination worth the effort.

LDSStorymakers conference, and a look at "Trail of Storms" by Marsha Ward

I went to the LDS Storymakers Conference this year, and I have to tell you that I was a little nervous because it was my first time and I wasn't sure what to expect. But I have to say I was totally impressed, enlightened and, excited. Listening and learning from successful authors, and authors like me, who are still in the baby stage of the magical journey. Yet, I believe we are all the teacher and all the student, (if that makes sense). Each one giving and receiving.

Along with that, just the work that went into makine the conference a success was mindboggling.

Another thing I want to do, today, is to tell you about a book I read a few weeks ago entitled, "Trail of Storms" by Marsha Ward.

I'm not usually into reading this genre, but because I know Marsha I decided to make an exeption, and I'm so glad I did. I found myself carrying the book with me to the Dr.'s Office, as well as each room in my house. Marsha took me on this incredible journey with the Owen family and their necessary, yet daring trek to the territory of New Mexico, and away from everything they owned and loved, away from the danger that threatened their lives if they stayed. I found myself completely drawn into the story, and into the lives of the family. It was a such a great read, Marsha. Now I'm going to have to get "The Man from Shenandoah".

And, because I brought up the subject of books, (what else do we authors talk about besides books?), I would like to tell you a little bit about my latest book, "Etcheon and the Secret of the Ancient"

Etcheon always believed he would live and die in his small village that he moved to with his grandmother, Granna Fela - safe, loved and protected. But with Granna's death comes new information about Etcheon's royal heritage and destiny, which suddenly throws him in the middle of a battle against a wicked king. On the run from hideous beasts sent to kill him, Etcheon is saved by a mysterious girl, a tree with magical powers, and A few amazing animals, who teach him all that he need to know and do to become who he was meant to be. With his new friends to protect and teach him, Etcheon undertakes a journey that will challenge his abilities and define his character as a warrior-prince charged to save his people.

One last thing. Michele Bell is giving out two autographed books and two tiles (you can choose either 8x8 or 12x12). Just go to her website and read her review with Jodi Robinson, author of "Women of Virture." Her website is: http://micheleabell.blogspot.com

Have a fun day.

The Sun is shining . . . oh happy day, lala lala.

Tis the song of a person who lives with Menieares Disease. Ah, yes, sun without clouds . . . A day without wind . . . It doesn't get any better than this because if its windy, I have to wear ear muffs when going outside. you see, if the wind gets in my ears verdigo follows within seconds. Yes, I know people look at me rather strangely when in the middle of the summer, (110 degrees in the shade) I'm wearing ear muffs while walking from my car to the inside of any store. But consider the alternative. (On second thought, don't consider the alternative . . . it's not a pretty sight). If the clouds are heavy and dark, I simply stay inside.

Next thought: On Thursday, April 23rd just after 8:00 a.m., I will have had my last radiation treatment. That day the sun will be shining. The temperature will be slidding up to the mid 80's and no wind is in the forecast. Yes!!!!!!

Now, on to the really important stuff. I want to give you my thoughts and a review of Kersten Campbell's book, "Confessions of a Completely Insane Mother."

This is a must have book, kept within reach at all times, so when you feel like hanging your child upside down inside his/her closet for misdeeds of the past 5 minutes, you grab this book instead - lock yourself in the bathroom -press earplugs deep into the ear canals so children's noises cannot penetrate - and open this book. Within a few minutes the misdeed will have been forgotten because you will be too busy giggling, chuckling, or outright laughing while thinking to yourself "I guess it could be worse."

Some chapters we all can relate to. take chapter 4 "Alice in Mormonland" for example . . . or Chapter 7, "The Secret Life of Wives." or Chapter 32, "How to Prepare for a Talk". (That one could be especially useful).

Now this is all I'm going to say about this book, because you have to read it to believe it, so I suggest you do just that. You will be much the wiser for doing so.

Thank you, Kersten, for writing this hilarious book

Thoughts of Spring and other things like Stacy's book "Life is Tough"

I know it's been awhile since I posted but between surgeries, radiation, children and grandchildren brightening my days, I've been preoccupied. But, today the house is quiet, The little fingerprints have been removed from the TV screen and the sliding glass door. The backyard golf sets are back on the shelf in the garage. The puzzles and coloring books are back in the closets. There's not a thing out-of-place. Did I mention that I miss all of the noise, the clutter, and the adorable little fingerprints? One more thing. When my son, my daughter-in-law, and my 5 grandsons locked their seatbelts and turned their van back toward Nampa, Idaho, I cried.

Now, being a mother of 4 sons and having 5 grandsons visiting for a week, I feel I am well qualified to review "Life is Tough. I doubt I'll Make it out Alive," by Stacy Gooch-Anderson.

I met Stacy at the ANWA (American Night Writers Association) in Gilbert, Arizona, and I liked her, immediately. I recognized her beautiful, sweet smile to be a reflection of her tender heart, and her book to a reflection of a delightful sense of humor.

As you read the pages, you chuckle, laugh outloud, smile, or shed a few tears. Every chapter is headlined with profound wisdom. Take chapter 17 for example. If wisom equals age and age is a state of mind, then it's safe to assume that one can use wisdom as he gets older to state his mind and never mind his mindless state when have fun. Everyone expects old people to dress oddly, have messy hair and be opinionated anyway.

Or chapter 22. Life's tapestry is woven with some very dark colors. Ironically, it is not meant to veil one's countenance in defeat but to lift one up, revealing his character.

In some cases, I'm sure she inserts a little extra to accentuate the positive, but she does so very creatively. "To walk in the path of another is to learn".

I can say now that I have left my footprints on the path of a dear friend who found that she had breast cancer 3 months ago. Though I felt a great deal of sympathy and compassion, I couldn't feel the deep emotion that goes along with the reality.

Then, a month later, I found that I had breast cancer and it was then I realized that even though my compassion was deep, it barely scratched the surface of my understanding. Where I had no words to console her, her words were my consolation.

She could explain that the feelings I was trying to suppress, were normal. That I wasn't a coward. She could tell me why I felt the way I did, why my world seemed suddenly strange, and I was grateful for her understanding.

She had to have Cemo. I didn't. She lost her hair. I still have mine. We will be going to radiation together, and we're planning to go out to lunch together, as often as possible.

Yes, to walk in the path of another is to learn one of the greatest lessons we will ever face. Though I wouldn't want to go through this illness, again, I realize the blessing I have received, and I thank my Heavenly Father for his wisdom in my behalf

Happy New Year

With the holidays over and the real world shining out at us from behind the clouds of snow, I have made my New Year's Resolutions, (written in pencil - a eraser to be found close by).

1. Excercise more.
2. Be more organized.
3. learn to play the piano pieces again that I once enjoyed but failed to keep up the practice.
4. Put paint on the canvas, instead of just walking by it.
5. Realize and enjoy the blessing that are mine.
6. Write, write, write.

The list goes on but these are the most important.

We actually had snow in St. George, for christmas, this year. It was beautiful. I have to say that I spent more time reflecting on the birth of the Savior, and how important He is in my life, than reflecting on my own life. I spent more time feeling grateful for my children and grandchilden than I did feeling sad that I couldn't have them gathered around me. (They all live out-of-state and I came down with Broncitis just a few days before we were to go Arizona to spend the holidays with our oldest son and his family).

The New Year brings with it more trials and more blessings. More challenges and more opportunities. They seem to always come in 2's. don't they.

Have a Very exiting 2009.

Tis the Season to be Thankful

Only 21 more days until Christmas and I'm just finishing off the leftovers from Thanksgiving. But we do have our outside Christmas lights up and when they light up the night, it brings the Christmas Spirt right into our home.

I have a new book out. Prince Etcheon and the Secret of the Ancient

If you get a chance, I hope you check it out

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Speed of Time

Has it been that long since I posted? Well, I will say a lot has happened and there is much to report. I have my website up. www.joannarnold.com, where I have all my paintings and books there to view and review. Hope you get a chance to check it out.

I have a new book, "Prince Etcheon and the Secret of the Ancient" that will be out any day, now. I have my copies and I have to say that I'm impressed with the cover.

Another thing I have learned this month is that not all things go the way we hope they will. The world is continually changing and I'm not sure I like what's happening. But one thing I am sure of and it is this: I'm proud to be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

My one wish is that those who don't understand us would take the time to find out the truth before they spread the lies.

One Minute Each night

I just read Anne Bradshaw's blog and I want to quote her exact words.

"This is the scariest election we as Christians have ever faced and from the looks of the polls, the Christians aren't voting Christian values. We all need to be on our knees.

Do you believe we can take God at His word? Call upon His name, then stand back and watch His wonders to behold? 2 Chronicles 7:14, gives us, as Christians, ownership of this land, and the ability to call upon God to heal it. I challenge you to do so. We have never been more desperate than now for God to heal our land. This election is the scariest.

“2 Chronicles 7:14--'If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.'

During WWII, there was an adviser to Churchill who organized a group of people who dropped what they were doing every night at a prescribed hour. For one minute, they prayed collectively for the safety of England, its people and peace. This had an amazing effect as bombing stopped. There is now a group of people organizing the same thing here in the United States of America and our citizens need prayer more than ever.

If you would like to participate: each evening at 9:00 PM Eastern Time (8:00 PM Central, 7:00 PM Mountain, 6:00 PM Pacific), stop whatever you are doing and spend one minute praying for the safety of the United States, our troops, our citizens, for peace in the world, the upcoming election, that the Bible will remain the basis for the laws governing our land and that Christianity will grow in the US."

I hope that everyone will take this scripture to heart and do as Anne has asked
